Executive Director, AAALAC International

Founded in 1965, AAALAC International is a private, not-for-profit corporation that enhances the quality of research, teaching, and testing by promoting humane, responsible animal care and use. The organization accomplishes these goals by providing advice and independent assessments to participating institutions, and accrediting animal care and use programs that meet or exceed applicable standards.
The governance of AAALAC International is comprised of more than 65 Member Organizations (Board of Trustees) with diverse interests including animal welfare, scientific discovery and science advocacy who have representatives serving on the AAALAC International Board of Trustees. The Executive Committee of the AAALAC International Board of Trustees plays the primary role in the oversight of AAALAC’s administrative operations and is the principal liaison between the Board of Trustees, the AAALAC Executive Office and the Council on Accreditation.
AAALAC accreditation is widely recognized as a vital component in achieving and maintaining a high-quality biomedical research program. Accreditation is AAALAC’s primary program, with more than 950 accredited organizations in 41 countries. To assist organizations in preparing for accreditation, AAALAC International offers a second program, its Program Status Evaluation service. Both prospective and currently accredited organizations benefit from the Association’s third component, its Education & Outreach Program.
The Association maintains offices in Frederick, Maryland; Pamplona, Spain; and Samutprakarn (Bangkok), Thailand. A staff of sixteen full-time employees directs and administers AAALAC International programs, with a 63 member Council on Accreditation leading the on-site assessments of animal care and use programs and determining accreditation status. The Executive Director
The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of AAALAC International and is based in Frederick, Maryland. Duties are in four areas: 1) administration of the AAALAC offices; 2) fiscal and personnel management for the Association; 3) oversight of the Accreditation, Program Status Evaluation and Education & Outreach programs; and 4) professional spokesperson for the organization. The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Trustees and implements programs consistent with Board-established policies.
The ideal candidate will have an earned postgraduate degree, demonstrated expertise in many aspects of research animal science and a firm understanding of the role of AAALAC International in the oversight of diverse research animal care and use programs using agricultural, aquatic, laboratory, wildlife and/or invertebrate animal species. Competitive candidates will have a broad appreciation of the functions of organizations and agencies involved in the regulation, oversight and/or promulgation of guidelines for the responsible conduct of research animal care and use on a regional, national and global scale. Experience in the management of nonprofit organizations also is highly desirable.
